Within that frame, the reasonable ambition is modest and worth pursuing: to arrive at each decade with the capacity to do what that decade requires, and to have enjoyed the intervening seasons rather than spent them preparing for the ones ahead.

From a practical standpoint, the same applies across the whole territory of health. A missed week of exercise. A month's span of poor sleep during a crisis. A period when mental health made everything else impossible. These are episodes in a long project, and the project continues afterwards unless the individual has decided, on the basis of the episode, that they are the kind of person who does not continue.

Physical activity, in turn, improves sleep quality and reduces the period taken to fall asleep, though not if performed intensely just before bed.
